Cannot Install SQL Server 2008 - Fails with Error Reboot Required

by David Leibowitz | November 30, 2008 | Comments: 9

Having a problem installing SQL Server 2008 and keep failing the pre-install check that tells you a reboot is required? Me too.

This is the fix that worked for me:

  • Open Regedit
  • Find the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager"
  • Rename the "PendingFileRenameOperations" value to "PendingFileRenameOperations2"
  • Do not restart the machine
  • Re-run the SQL Installation

This worked for me (and thank $DEITY google found this post) by simply removing the value in the 'PendingFileRenameOperaions' reg_dword_sz value under the 'Session Manager' key. Apparently this value was stuck. I had rebooted three times, and on the second reboot had even run Windows Updates on the Win2008 server.

Yes, that's why the fix includes NOT rebooting the computer.
