Having a problem installing SQL Server 2008 and keep failing the pre-install check that tells you a reboot is required? Me too.
This is the fix that worked for me:
Open Regedit Find the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager" Rename the "PendingFileRenameOperations" value to "PendingFileRenameOperations2" Do not restart the machineRe-run the SQL Installation

Pingback from server error | Digg hot tags
This worked for me (and thank $DEITY google found this post) by simply removing the value in the 'PendingFileRenameOperaions' reg_dword_sz value under the 'Session Manager' key. Apparently this value was stuck. I had rebooted three times, and on the second reboot had even run Windows Updates on the Win2008 server.
Yes, that's why the fix includes NOT rebooting the computer.
Thanks man! Save me a lot of trouble
