Restore a SharePoint Site (WSS 3.0 and MOSS)

by David Leibowitz | January 13, 2009 | Comments: 2

** Assumes you have a backup created ** :)

1. In SharePoint Portal, create a New Site
2. Set Template -> Blank
3. Open the new site in SharePoint Designer 2007
4. Go to Site -> Administration -> Restore Web Site
5. Select your backup file and let the wizard do its magic.

The key is to create a new site and to ensure it is blank.

I have tried unsuccessfully to restore an SP 3.0 site several times - can't wait to try it this way. If you have a second, do you know the reason why the standard method (Restore into a new site) never works? Or at least doesn't work for me and everyone I know....

I know the backup part works because one of my customers use MS support to get their site back with it. (Backing up using scheduled tasks)

Anyway, thanks a bunch.

Beats me. I agree, it should be more intuitive, but it's not.

Hope this method works out for you.
